Isaak impressed by fun Yusuf Islam

Rocker/actor CHRIS ISAAK is convinced he'll stun music fans when his interview with YUSUF ISLAM airs on his new TV show THE CHRIS ISAAK HOUR - because the Muslim convert isn't as "stuffy" as his reputation suggests.

Isaak was thrilled when the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens agreed to make a rare TV appearance on his show - and he was stunned when the Muslim convert agreed to sing old hit I Love My Dog to his manager's pooch.

Isaak says, "His first hit was I Love My Dog and I said, 'Will you play some of it for the dog?' - and he did!

"I think people have this idea that Cat Stevens is very stuffy or uptight because he's a religious guy now, and so you can't joke about anything. He's funny and he was a lot of fun to have on the show."

And bachelor Isaak admits he learned a thing or two about marriage from his guest: "I asked him if his mother picked out his wife and when he gave the answer he was pretty legitimate, because we have all these ideas about how you're supposed to pick a wife or be in love - but mostly they don't work. Let's face it, half the marriages go down the toilet.

"I said to Cat, 'There might be more marriages that worked if people went to their parents and asked them, 'What do you think of these people?' Nowadays, people go, 'What time does the bar close? You want to get married?'"

Alright, well there has been a pretty deafening silence over this on this board.

All I can say is that Isaak must be easily impressed. Fun?? Funny peculiar more like, and that's being charitable.

I wouldn't watch this if you paid me. How could he?? (CI) Bloody hell.

I think I'm old and ugly enough to decide these matters for myself and I will not get over Chris Isaak sucking up to Cat Stevens, thanks anyway.

Did Chris really write this?

Two thumbs down and if I had any more thumbs they'd be down too sad.gif

I don't know much about Cat Stevens, but I've just finished watching the show and was impressed by the quality of the interview. It wasn't about religion, but his journey from starting to play music, his illness, his marriage and how music re-entered his life. (sorry religion was touched on, but wasn't the main focus of the interview).

Chris was a wonderful interviewer and of the episodes I've seen (all except Trisha Yearwood) this was by far the best and I loved how Chris's and Cat's voices blended in so well - duet on next cd please laugh.gif

Plenty of reading here, just for starters, if anyone is interested enough. It's just one person's view, of course.

Personal statement here:

http://www.markhumphrys.com/

Personally I wouldn't touch Cat Stevens with a barge pole ("creepy" is a good word to use) and I am quite sure he'd hate me rolleyes.gif I think I still have, somewhere, Cat Stevens Greatest hits from back in the 70s ... though I didn't buy it myself. We listened to it, there were some pretty good songs on it, but I wasn't interested enough to get any full LPs of his. It was just a case of being seen to be up to date with being trendy with music more than anything else laugh.gif That is something I couldn't give a rat's about these days.

I trust that you jest about Isaak putting a duet with this man on a record? unsure.gif blink.gif

Personally, I have liked Cat Stevens as a performer. His religion is his business.

If Chris chooses to record a song with him, and put it on an album, then I will buy the album.

While Cat is not a personal fave of mine (neither is anyone he has interviewed so far, actually) I enjoy watching them being interviewed. Esp. by Mr. Isaak. You never know what someone will say that will ring true or interest you and maybe open up a whole new path (books, music, ideas_) to explore.

I think this is indicative of Chris' character. As someone who has been interviewed hundreds of times, Chris knows how stories can get taken out of context and out of proportion. I think he wanted to interview someone whose music meant a lot to him and was willing to uncover the real person, rather than rely on hearsay and ugly rumors. Again, Chris proves to be a stand up guy.

You bet he does, bonoist. wink.gif

I am so glad that Chris doesn't let a person's beliefs get in the way of the music. And that Chris' respect of the man's talent meant that he had to interview this man.

Chris chose to 'Live Boldly' on this one. And his admiration won the contest with should I/shouldn't I? stuff, and what it might/might not mean to ratings. If people are put out or put off or perplexed that is nothing to do with Chris' wish to interview a performer he admires and has admired for a long time. Good on Chris for going his own way, and choosing to interview the guests he wants to interview. Afterall, the show bares his name.

The 'flick the channel button' is available for the easily offended. huh.gif

You couldn't find anybody less easily offended than me and I find Cat Stevens offensive. To each their own. I don't need to flick the channel, we don't have Foxtel any more and I am sure the lovely people that send me stuff (they know who they are) will know not to bother this time around! I am sure Cat Stevens is very grateful that someone was prepared to give him some air time, be nice to him and not ask him any awkward questions. He has stuff to promote smile.gif I just hope that this plug for someone I don't care for AT ALL doesn't come back to bite Chris on his bare bum. As you say, the show bears his name. Let's just say I am not impressed and I do realise that nobody gives a stuff what I think.

Imagine ... John Lennon (I'm not a huge fan but this song came into my mind).

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Quick question. I'm watching some of this show on YouTube--Is that one of Ricky Nelson's sons playing the guitar with Yusuf? I haven't watched the whole thing yet so not even sure if they introduce the other musicians--and it hasn't been mentioned on the boards--so maybe I am wrong-- but it looks a lot like he is a member of the Nelson family, however, I am also watching this on a very small screen.

Thanks.

Very good eye, RoadRunner! Yes, it's Gunnar Nelson. I was wondering if it was a Nelson son the whole time I was watching (I used to have a big crush on the Nelsons in the 80s). Chris mentions his name as the show ends. I thought it was very cool that Gunnar was there, considering what a big Ricky Nelson fan Chris is. smile.gif

Super for him- wonder if the nelson's & cat Stevens( back in the day)were/are friends.

I'm sorry hunny but just because someone said something stupid, (and I know you'll elaborate to justify your comments) doesn't make him NOT a good artist.

It's just stupid.

It just annoys me.

I never said that. Has anyone ever existed who hasn't said something stupid? You can either like or not like Mr. Stevens. I don't like. Fortunately I never really enjoyed his music that much back in the day so never had to make any hard decisions once he started going peculiar rolleyes.gif I did love Harold and Maude though ... Cat Stevens songs run right through it. Worth watching if you haven't already.

Just some general stuff here ...

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/artic...%20wife_1021946

YUSUF ISLAM - YUSUF ISLAM'S MOTHER CHOSE HIS WIFE

there are some photos with the missus ... I can just hear my dear Granny asking "who got you ready?" smile.gif

Muslim musical icon YUSUF ISLAM asked his mother to choose his wife, because he couldn't decide who to spend the rest of his life with. Islam - who changed his name from CAT STEVENS and walked away from music when he converted to Islam in 1978 - denies having an arranged marriage. But the singer admits his mother helped him choose wife FAUZIA MUBARAK ALI in 1979. The 58-year-old says, "People think it was arranged because my mother was involved. But I was thinking of marrying one of two girls I was dating. I brought each to my mother at different times and asked which she thought I should marry. It was her choice. "Of course, it was mine as well, but I gave my mother the option to be part of that decision."

Do Yusuf Islam’s Daughters Wear The Veil?

My four daughters all follow the basic wearing of clothes which modestly cover their God-given beauty. They’re extremely well educated; they do not cover their faces and interact perfectly well with friends and society.

The beautifully modest expression of Islamic dress is one of the things which attracted me to my wife in the first place. She too does not veil her face but adopts the normal traditional approach to covering her hair in public and for places and times of worship. My daughters all followed her example.

Indeed, my wife was a teacher of dress and fashion design (you’d be surprised to know what these ladies wear when in ladies-only company!) The restriction to see a woman’s beauty and form is only for males who are not closely related. Uncles, sons, nephews etc. all are accepted as close family and there is no restriction with them.

The styles of dress and covering adopted by men and women in various parts of the world may differ; African dress style is different from Asian and Arabian, for instance. The basic reason for the Divine guideline of dress is to preserve the love and affection of husbands and wives within the privacy of the family; and to maintain a high level of dignity and respect for the opposite sex.

I also believe that the mode of dress should not make people’s heads turn. The idea of wearing something that identifies oneself as ultra-liberal or ultra-religious, could be taken as immoderate, which is not what I consider to be the spirit of what God prefers. However, there is a balance which must be maintained. There is a saying that ‘God is beautiful, and He loves beauty’. Some may say that modesty itself is an expression of true, inner beauty, and modesty is linked to faith

I think that Cat Stevens is a genius and much more talented than Isaak. It seems like some people here have a lot of prejudices against Muslims. Perhaps you are influenced by the western media which likes to paint Muslims as being evil. Some of the nicest people that I know are Muslims.

The problem is not that Islam breeds violence and crime but polygamy. According to Psychology Today, countries in the Middle East and Africa where polygamy is legal are the most violent in the world. In those countries, because men can have many wives, there is a shortage of women. As a result, there will be some men who will never get married if they are too poor to afford a wife. Feeling like they have no future, these poor, single men will engage in more risky behaviour such as crime, terrorism, violence & rape. They will also become envious of men who have wives and will resort to rape if they can't have wives of their own. Women in Middle East must keep their heads covered as a protection against rape. However, the head covering doesn't protect them from rape since the envy of poor, unattached men from not having a wife is still present. This explains why the Middle East and Africa have such a high rate in rape and violence against women.

Another reason why the Aids epidemic is so high in Africa among women is that a lot of these women contracted Aids from rape.
