EMI goes online

FROM today, EMI Australia will tackle the likes of iTunes and Bigpond Music by setting up its own online music store.

EMI is the first label locally to set up its own MP3 store - www.musicheadmp3 .com.au - with more than 500,000 tracks from its catalogue of artists for music-lovers to download as high-quality MP3s.

Isaak's Oz connection

CALIFORNIAN rock crooner Chris Isaak is so popular here that he's signed to an Australian record label.

Having sold more than a million albums locally - not surprising, given how often he's here - Isaak has signed with Universal Music Australia.
He's heading here again to promote his Live In Australia album and will attend the Melbourne Cup. He's also working on another album, due in 2009.

"Boy, do I have them fooled!'' Isaak said. "They haven't realised that me making a live record in Australia just gives me one more reason to come back to a place I love.

"I'm counting down the days!''

Thanks for the info, Uncle Pat.

And Chris, WE LOVE that you love us. But some shows on the East Coast would be greatly appreciated. unsure.gif

After all, we love you too. wink.gif

But you are so going to love the venue in WA in March '09. The Margaret River area must surely be 'God's Own Country'.

Oops...Suddenly this site is not letting me post a reply...But is just adding my clicks to Uncle Pat's post.(I am editing them as I go, so you are not seeing the replies just repeating UP's post.)

Again....We love you right back Chris. So come on Down. I know WA is beautiful. I was born there. BUT, the rest of Oz loves you too. And is also gorgeous. wink.gif
senayr
some Queensland venues other than Brisbane would be nice too. I'm more than willing to make the trek back to Melbourne as long as the concerts aren't the same time as the cup. Its just too expensive to get a hotel ......

Chris Isaak signs deal with Universal Music Australia
29 Sep 2008

UNIVERSAL MUSIC PROUDLY ANNOUNCE CHRIS ISAAK WILL RETURN TO AUSTRALIA FOR A NOVEMBER PROMOTIONAL TOUR IN SUPPORT OF ISAAK'S EXCLUSIVE AUSTRALIAN ONLY 'LIVE IN AUSTRALIA' ALBUM

& ATTEND THE 2008 MELBOURNE CUP CARNIVAL

SYDNEY, September 29th, 2008 - Universal Music Australia is delighted to announce the signing of international recording artist CHRIS ISAAK to the label and will market & distribute a new Isaak release in Australia and New Zealand effective immediately. The Grammy nominated singer songwriter has developed strong ties to Australia over the course of his stellar career with combined sales surpassing one million units in the territory as well as an enduring relationship with Australian concertgoers for more than a decade.

George Ash, Managing Director, Universal Music Australia, commented; "Chris is a legend. I am immensely proud to have the opportunity to work with Chris. He is an extraordinary artist, dynamic performer and consummate entertainer. His phenomenal success in Australia pays homage to the special relationship he has with his many fans around the country. We are looking forward to a wonderful partnership and to the exciting new album from Chris, 'Live in Australia' which is set for release on October 18th."

The San Franciscan native will be coming to Australia in early November to promote his first ever live album titled 'Chris Isaak - Live In Australia'. The live set was recorded during Isaak's sold out concerts as part of his 'Best Of Chris Isaak' 2006 tour with his long time band, Silvertone. The album features quintessential Isaak songs including 'Wicked Game', Somebody's Crying', 'Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing', 'Speak Of The Devil' and 'Only The Lonely' as well as a few fun stories. The live album is an entrée to new studio recordings that will form Isaak's new studio album set for release in early 2009.

Isaak commented on the deal; "I'm really excited about my new record label. The people at Universal Records in Australia are hard working and tops in their field. But boy do I have them fooled. They haven't realised that me making a live record in Australia just gives me one more reason to come back to a place I love! I wonder if surf wax and sunscreen is deductable as a recording expense? I am counting down the days until I return!"

Isaak is no stranger to the annual Melbourne Cup Carnival and will return to Flemington in November to be a guest of Andrew McManus Presents. In 2006, Isaak and Silvertone performed in the coveted pre-race Melbourne Cup performance slot.

Isaak's most recent Australian album release in June 2006 heralded a 'Best Of' collection following nine albums, twelve singles, two Grammy nominations, several motion picture roles and his own critically acclaimed TV series "The Chris Isaak Show". Australians embraced the 'Best Of' album and rocketed the collection to the pinnacle of the National ARIA Albums Chart at #1 upon its debut. The album has remained in the best sellers lists surpassing triple platinum sales as well as culminating in a hugely successful 'Best Of' sell-out Australian tour in 2006.

The new label deal ends the long association Isaak held in Australia with Warner Bros Records, a division of Warner Music Australia.

"I want to sincerely thank Warner Music Australia's past and present staff for all their dedicated work and for the memorable times we shared." said Isaak. "I am genuinely looking forward to this new chapter in partnership with George Ash and his team at Universal Music and look forward to a rewarding and enduring musical journey. And maybe surfing some waves as well!"

dry.gif If they had any economic smarts, they would also release it World wide (esp. in the U.S.) since they obviously are quoted as calling him "international recording artist CHRIS ISAAK" [means they should known he's popular all around]

I'm gonna guess that Australians will get a first hand listen and opportunity to purchase the album....but it won't stay an "EXCLUSIVE AUSTRALIAN ONLY 'LIVE IN AUSTRALIA' ALBUM" for long [if the company had any economic sense in them].

I could be wrong, though I hope I'm right!

Otherwise....which of you Australian gals and guys want to start taking our orders? LOL! laugh.gif

Miss SugarDLuxe
So is "Universal Music Australia" Isaak's official record label now or just for promotional
stuff over our side of the world? Would he still have a record label in America? rolleyes.gif

I'm just happy that either way, it brings Isaak back to our shores. I just hope that they
announce more tour dates for the east coast. Maybe not while he is here in November
but a national tour in March would ROCK!

"Chris Isaak To Release Live Album Recorded In Australia
by Paul Cashmere - September 30 2008

Chris Isaak is going to release a collection of songs recorded live on his last Australian tour as his next album.

‘Chris Isaak – Live In Australia’ was recorded during the 2006 tour with his band Silvertone.

The new album will also come with a new deal. Isaak has jumped ship from Warner to Universal.

“I’m really excited about my new record label. The people at Universal Records in Australia are hard working and tops in their field,” Chris said in a statement. “But boy do I have them fooled,” he added.

Îsaak is no stranger to the Aussie land or sea, for that matter. “They haven’t realised that me making a live record in Australia just gives me one more reason to come back to a place I love! I wonder if surf wax and sunscreen is deductable as a recording expense? I am counting down the days until I return!”

Those days will be November. Isaak will be back in Australia in time for another Melbourne Cup. (He was at the Cup in 2006 and will attend the 2008 race).

Australia is Isaak’s best market and he has thanked the people at Warner for his success down under. “I want to sincerely thank Warner Music Australia’s past and present staff for all their dedicated work and for the memorable times we shared,” he said. “I am genuinely looking forward to this new chapter in partnership with George Ash and his team at Universal Music and look forward to a rewarding and enduring musical journey. And maybe surfing some waves as well!”

A new studio album from Chris Isaak will also be released by Universal in 2009."

P.S. I hope his new (US) label isn't OOHCT (out of his car trunk...). Just kiddin'. Hopefully they'll market it on Amazon or through Mailboat or something like that..

Well good news all round. smile.gif @ Sugz ~ I'm sure there'll be concerts in all the usual places next March - Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brissy etc......not sure if Chris is performing at the Cup though, or if it's just a private visit (not that I'd be going to Flemington anyway....I'd have to start saving up for a fascinator first. laugh.gif ) There should be other promo stuff though....and very nice of the man I must say, to release his CD just in time (almost, anyway) for my birthday too! tongue.gif I put in a request this morning for an early Chrissie present too (the concert ticket, lol).

Mizz Cheryl, if it comes down to the wire, a feather attached to a bobby pin could pass as a Fascinator these days. Just needs to be angled at that right angle!!! wink.gif

Interesting to see that even the BIG PLAYERS in the 'Birdcage' are cutting back this year. Emirates is a major sponsor that will be operating on a budget! Their marquee is the one that eveyone tries to gatecrash. Maybe not this year.

Too true, kazz.

After I saw this youtube video, made me see how quickly the music could be ready (but isn't).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI-4fODJyiE

Good that it will finally be out, though.

Don't think CI understands how truly MORE successful he could be if his material was released in a more timely fashion.

All this stuff should have been released with his last tour.

He and the band are great performers and I can't help but think that his management leaves too much money on the table by notgetting their **it together when it comes to marketing and releases. HE DESERVES to be compensated for his art, and they could do so much better by him. Really. There is nothing wrong with him be recompensed for his effort, and dragging this out means LESS $s, economics 101...duh...

This music market is just too f'd UP to let stuff go years by before releasing it. And the cover album, hey he does great covers, but I was just kidding when I said that a good covers album is better than a lame all new music album, Chris (well, partly kidding anyway.) I still hope they're just kidding about the covers album (wasn't that what the band was joking about in July at the concerts?? Geeze.)

Well, I guess once I got past the shock that he hadn't decided to go do his own thang (indy label, i mean), I reckoned the Universal thing makes more sense, being 'the easy way' (since he's gonna have a show and more commitments then time will allow , so it seems).

That was a very interesting conversation between Mark Needham (Chris Isaak's longtime Mix Engineer) and Scott Austin. As a side issue, I e-mailed "Pauline" who is in charge of Mark's web site, a couple of years ago to ask when the "Best of Chris Isaak" would be released and she got back to me. Very cool.

What I take from this is that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The content - music/lyrics - has got to be there first and foremost. It's all about the song. That's what I've always believed also. So does Chris. That's why every 3.5 minutes of his art actually IS art.

Chris has got to make sure he's compensated for his art. Agreed. That means lawyers behind the scenes. I don't believe that he will release a song on the Internet as a giveaway. Not going to happen. Yes, I'd like to hear more songs from Chris but I also don't want a diluted result. On the other hand, yes, I would like to see material released more quickly. Chris has got to do it his way, however, and I'm OK with that.

Thanks, Uncle Pat for that YouTube interview. I had read interviews with Mark Needham but never seen him on video.
unclepat
Hey Fifi, what UP? No one is saying giving away stuff for free on the net.

I AM saying, something recorded LIVE in the digital realm takes very little tweaking (some you can't tweak even if you wanted to) or time to press them.

Isaak didn't have a label for how long now (is it 2 years or something like that??).

He could have pressed them himself and sold (read like zillions) lots of the LIVE in Australia, and sold them at the most recent (past 2 years) of touring. Maybe it was some legality thing? Maybe.

You can see from the interview w/Mark that he can pretty much tweak stuff in very little time (like a day or two-sometimes less). Now Isaak has a new label, so it is a mute point I reckon. I just think it's too bad he didn't start his own lil' label, cause he'd see 3 times more returns (so he wouldn't have to work so dang hard all the time), which would give him more time for his other projects like film projects and underwater basketweaving...

Yeah, we all know he's a little bit of a perfectionist (slightly) and releases nada before it's time. But really, if you say that music and your fans are the most important thing, it's really not that difficult, or, at least, it doesn't have to be...There is not as much red tape laywer stuff as you may think\. He's, well, a procrastinator. He drags this stuff out.

Anyway, I guess that's what makes him a TRUE artist, huh??

UP
FifiKitty
No, I didn't say that you said Chris should give music away for free on the Internet. A live CD, yeah, wouldn't take a whole lot of mixing as compared to a studio album but the distribution perhaps takes longer (that and getting a new label). Anyhow, the thing will be out this month. (in Australia that is......thanks to my Aussie pal who said she'd send me one)
unclepat
Thanks for the edit. The way you wrote it before , made it sound that way.

Yeah, well, it's done. So be it.

Yeah, and like you said........sorry, but I just can't resist........."it is a mute point I reckon". I hope that Chris never becomes mute!!
