ISAAK: 'TV HALVES YOUR SEX LIFE'

2006-06-06 21:44:28 -

CHRIS ISAAK insists he would much rather chase women than sit around and watch a big screen TV, because it puts a damper on your sex life.

The WICKED GAME star prefers to be social and not watch mindless television for hours on end.

He explains, "I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, never have - I'd much prefer to work out or go surfing or chase women or hang out and play guitar with my friends.

"Everyone else wants to buy a huge TV.

"When I'm 85 and the only thing I can move is my thumb, then I'll get one of those big screens.

"You know they halve your sex life - seriously, there's been a study!"

Clown prince of country

There's never a dull moment when Chris Isaak and his wicked wit are in town. By Michael Dwyer.

CHRIS ISAAK aims to please. The first thing he does when I pull out my recorder is to pick up his monogrammed acoustic guitar and holler: "Turn that thing on, man! Let's get bootleggin'!"

He means it. We get two good takes in the next 15 minutes, cool rockabilly tunes by Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley, with drummer Kenney Dale Johnson harmonising and brushing his custom snare head like they're rocking a flatbed truck.

Then come the spontaneous celebrity encounter tales. "I got a Paul McCartney story for ya," Isaak offers, after demanding I reveal the precious vinyl artefact sticking out of my bag (hey, it was on sale at the record shop while he was signing autographs).

The story is fast and animated, with Isaak playing his usual role as the lonely hangdog drifter, this time eating pot noodles in a cafe when beset by wandering rock'n'roll royalty - who he also plays, with an amusing Liverpudlian lilt.

"So, of course, I'm dyin' to ask him about the Beatles but the one thing you can't do with these guys is ask them about what they do," Isaak says.

"That's like an interview. These guys do hundreds of interviews and that's work. So you ask them about politics or pretty much anything else, but then Sir Paul starts off the conversation with, 'You know, when the Beatles were just starting out'."

Thighs are slapped. Maybe you had to be there. If you've seen any of Isaak's movies, his cable TV show, or even heard the hilarious commentary track on his new DVD compilation, you'll know it's all about timing.

Sitting eagerly upright in a smashing pinstripe suit and tie under a Morrissey-trouncing quiff, Isaak doesn't appear to consider his interviews work. Actually, they may not even be interviews. When the record company lady prises open the door of the suite to mouth "five more minutes", I'm yet to ask my first question.

"I love what I do," he says, indicating with raised palms the guitar in his lap and everything it's brought him since he cut his first album in 1984. "It was actually Kenney who said to me, 20 years ago, 'Boy, I don't ever wanna hear you whine'."

Naturally, eventually he says, "This is the best job in the world". But not before another brief character piece in which he pretends to be a pompous cockney metal-head bemoaning his lot as an overindulged pop star. Johnson's smile says he's heard it all before.

Chris Isaak is a very 21st-century kind of performer. He cavorts with the media with almost as much relish as he does with the half-naked supermodels in his videos. The Chris Ihow, his cable TV hit, turns pop stardom isaak Snto a sitcom, and in real life he seems determined to do much the same thing.

On Monday night, Andrew Denton's dogged line of romantic inquiry was mere grist for Isaak's self-deprecating wit and diversionary guitar tactics. On Tuesday, when Rove McManus' excruciatingly dull interview with Jennifer Aniston was down for the count, Isaak came bolting from the green room like the comedy cavalry to provide the sole moment of brilliance.

His latest big-screen role was in John Waters' A Dirty Shame, an absurdly graphic sex comedy seemingly at odds with his God-fearing middle-American country-pop heartland. "I think God-fearing middle America knows to give John Waters a pretty wide berth," he replies with a grin. "I said, 'Is it disgusting and perverted and degrading?' He said 'Yes', so I said 'Sign me up'."

Musically Isaak might be accused of being a little more safe and sanitary. The Best of Chris Isaak is a long, smooth simmer of reverb-drenched twang, croon and heartbreak, with his signature tune Wicked Game the clear-cut jewel in its crown. At the record store lunchtime gig earlier, he cut to the chase by playing it first.

"I love that song, and it's very close to what I do," he says without a trace of whining. "It's right around the centre of what I do so I'm very happy to be remembered for it. I always feel sorry for Los Lobos. Their best-known song is La Bamba, which is nothing like what they do." He has a crack at the tune in a comical redneck voice to illustrate his point.

There's time for just one question before he bounds off to another "interview". What were some of his hair's formative influences? "Well, if you see Elvis Presley in Loving You ... I mean, there's this guy out there whose hair is so black, it's blue." Speechless for once, he shakes his own impeccable 'do' with due reverence.

The telltale flecks of grey (he's 49) do little to detract from his perma-youthful charisma as he leaps from the couch to put his guitar to bed. "This is the best thing I ever bought," he murmurs lovingly over its sunburst finish, prominently decorated with C-H-R-I-S I-S-A-A-K in chunky mother-of-pearl.

"I did that myself in the early days," he says, " 'cause if ever anyone saw me on television just for a second, I didn't want 'em sayin' 'Who is that guy?' Johnny Cash had his name on his guitar. If it's good enough for Johnny, it's good enough for me."

The Best of Chris Isaak CD/DVD is out on Warner Reprise. He returns to play Melbourne on November 2 and 3.

Isaak heads to Hard Rock -- send for ice

Posted June 9, 2006

We don't have anything cleverly snarky to say about crooning Louisiana native Chris Isaak, other than to point out that whenever we hear "Baby's Done a Bad, Bad Thing" the room always feels a whole lot hotter for some reason.

Glass of water, table one.

Chris Isaak will be at Hard Rock Live on Sept. 3. Tickets are $35-$75 and go on sale today.

ISAAK SERENADES SURPRISED NEWLYWEDS

Singer CHRIS ISAAK thrilled a couple in Australia when he stopped by their wedding reception and serenaded them with his hit WICKED GAME.

The BABY DID A BAD THING singer was touring Down Under and staying at the Intercontinental Hotel in Sydney when he joined the couple for a few post-wedding ceremony drinks with their party. Isaak stepped up and gave a spontaneous rendition of his hit song, to the delight of the crowd on Saturday (10JUN06).

A groomsmen told the Sydney Daily Telegraph, "It was a moment to remember."

It would be pretty cool. However, is "Wicked Game" the best song to be singing at someone's wedding? smile.gif
Miss SugarDLuxe
My girlfriend was married in November and she had us all walking down the isle to Wicked Game.
It was just the instrumental version but I found it really hard to concentrate though. *giggle* Was
picturing Chris singing it and I had the lyrics swirling around in my head. huh.gif

Hey Foreverblue - at least he didn't serenade them with BDABBT. tongue.gif

Funny that you should write that. I was thinking the same thing earlier. I guess most of Chris' songs aren't pro-love. "Two Hearts" might have been a better choice though...

Boots and all

We're used to visiting rock stars snapping up Buddhist Punk and Tsubi gear as souvenirs. But when crooner Chris Isaak and his drummer, Kenny Dale Johnson, hit town to promote Isaak's greatest hits album, both opted for less obvious choices. Isaak sported RM Williams boots for an industry-only gig, and Johnson confessed a love for a sloppy joe from the Fortune of War Hotel, in the Rocks, which always gets a response back home in San Francisco. "The vets don't mind it — it's the hippies who do," he told Fashion police. The hotel's sold out of sloppy joes, but the T-shirts are a rock-star steal for $22.
Miss SugarDLuxe
Good ole RM Williams hey!

I wear RM boots in the garden. Whoo hoo, I'm in good company then
although I guess Chris would have bought dress RM Williams. biggrin.gif

I am certainly glad that Chris Isaak doesn't do any drugs. Drugs are bad for you. Not to mention that they ruin your brain cells.

-Deanna
FifiKitty
Chris Isaak doesn't need to do drugs. Writing and singing and playing wonderful music all day negates the need for any kind of "recreational therapy". Too bad more musicians/composers don't adhere to this belief. When you have a God-given talent like Chris has, you have to treasure it for all it's worth.
ChrisIsFine
I agree with you there, Fifi. I just hope that Chris never ever tries drugs. I am pretty sure he wouldn't.

Q: High school reunions: Love them, never go and — either way — why?

High school reunions are just OK. The only reunion that I have attended was my 25th from Stagg High School in Stockton. Singer Chris Isaak was in my class, it was an interesting and fun evening to watch all the "groupies" follow Chris around.

Sorry, it didn't quote the quote. Here's what I was referring to:

They Said What?! Celebrity Quotes...

"I don't do drugs. They take away from your innate ability to chase women." --- Rocker Chris Isaak has incentives to stay sober.
KARAOKEVOX
It's funny because there's NO SUCH THING as an "innate ability to chase women."

Guestagain, are you guy who's been chasing women since you could walk?
